Chop a track and play

Chop splits a long sample into shorter sounds and places them on pads starting at P1. You can then play sections of a track or rhythm phrase in a different order.

For your first try, use a short drum phrase with clear boundaries and divide it into 8 Slices.

Warning

Chop replaces samples on pads starting at P1, using as many pads as the number of Slices created. Save any Kit you want to keep first.

1. Prepare the source sample

  1. Add a WAV / MP3 track or phrase to a sampler pad
  2. In the SAMPLER part's SOUND mode, press that pad briefly twice to enter Edit
  3. Use Start and End to keep only the range you want to Chop

A phrase a few seconds long is easier to understand than a whole long track when you first try this.

Add a sample Edit Start / End

2. Open the Chop screen

Press P1 Chop on the Edit screen. The Chop screen shows the planned slice boundaries on the waveform.

3. Choose how to handle speed

Pad Setting Result
P1 FIT Fits the current beat or finalized Loop length. Speed and pitch change together
P2 KEEP Keeps the original sample's speed and pitch

FIT needs a reference beat or finalized Loop. If neither exists, NOTHING TO FIT is displayed.

Tip

Try KEEP to preserve the feel of the original track, or FIT to match the beat currently playing.

4. Choose how to divide the sample

Pad Division method
P5 4 Slice
P6 8 Slice
P7 12 Slice
P8 MANUAL. Use the lower dial to choose 4–12 Slices

After selecting, press Fn1 to Preview the planned slices in order from the equivalent of P1. Changing the division method resets Preview to the first Slice.

Cut while listening: TAP CUT

If equal divisions do not fit, use P4 TAP CUT.

  1. Press P4 to start playing the selected range
  2. Press P4 at the start of each next sound to add a cut point
  3. Playback to the end confirms the cuts automatically. Press Fn1 to finish earlier

You can create up to 12 Slices. The first Slice is created automatically from the playback start position.

5. Execute Chop

  1. Check the planned slices with Fn1
  2. Press Fn2 CHOP
  3. Wait until processing messages such as CHOPPING disappear

When finished, the device returns to the SAMPLER part's PLAY screen, with Slices assigned from P1 onward. Starting the next Slice stops the previous Slice.

6. Turn the result into a Loop

After Chop, choose either option:

  • Short operation for DONE: create only the Slices and play the pads yourself
  • Hold Fn2 for MAKE LOOP: place the first 4 or 8 Slices into Rec in their original order

After MAKE LOOP, you can still overdub a different order in REC mode or use Undo.

Notes on chopped Slices

Chopped Slices are special samples that preserve rhythmic positions. Start / End, Pitch, Reverse, further Chop and assignment to the sample synth are not available. You can adjust their volume and play them.
