What is KANTAN Play?
KANTAN Play is a palm-sized 6-track MIDI sequencer that lets anyone — from beginners to professionals — instantly perform and compose full-band arrangements. Using the KANTAN Music System's degree-based chord logic, a single player can conduct six instruments simultaneously. No music theory is required to get started.
Press numbered chord buttons (scale degrees I–VII) to trigger 6-part arrangements in real time. Tap the rhythm — six instruments follow your finger. Five Play Modes cover everything from free jamming to fully automated song playback.
Record chord progressions, slot changes, and part on/off operations — then replay them as Auto Song. Switch between Auto and Manual part operation during live playback. Edit per-instrument arpeggio patterns in a 64-step sequencer.
The player conducts a full ensemble — drums, bass, guitar, piano, strings and more — all from a single button. Six instrument icons appear on the touchscreen; tap any to toggle it on or off in real time. No comparable palm-sized device delivers this experience.
3 steps to a full band sound
Choose from Pop, Rock, Jazz, House, Hip-Hop, and more. Each preset loads six instrument tracks with genre-appropriate arpeggio patterns across 8 slots (Intro, Verse A/B, Fill, Outro, etc.).
Match the key to your song or instrument. All six tracks transpose instantly.
Numbered buttons represent scale degrees (I–VII). Press one and all six tracks begin playing that chord. Tap repeatedly to control the rhythm — your finger becomes the conductor's baton. Toggle individual instrument parts on/off with the touchscreen at any time.
Enable Recording to capture chord progressions, slot changes, and part on/off operations. Replay in Auto Song mode — choose Auto part operation (fully automated) or Manual (chord progression auto-plays; slot and part changes remain under your control).
Customize each instrument's arpeggio in the 64-step sequencer. 6 note slots per step, ±3 octave range. Choose from 128 GM voices. Voicing options include Guitar, Close, Pentatonic scale, and Chromatic scale.
| Free Play | Perform freely — no tempo lock, full expressive control. |
|---|---|
| Beat Play | Auto-advance at set BPM; player controls chord change timing. Similar to accompaniment mode on consumer keyboards. |
| Guide Play | Chord progression displayed on screen (from a recording or one of 30 built-in popular songs); player must press the correct button to advance — ideal for practice and learning. |
| Free + Guide | Chord sheet displayed for reference (recording or built-in songs); player performs freely regardless of correctness. |
| Auto Song | Fully automated playback of recorded progression. Switch between Auto part operation (all recorded slot/part changes play back) and Manual (player controls parts and slots; progression runs automatically). |

Where and how it gets used
A singer-songwriter sits at a café with KANTAN Play. In under two minutes they have a 4-chord loop with drums, bass, piano, and strings — enough to record a voice memo demo.
A violinist sets the key, picks a Jazz preset, and plays along with a dynamic backing band — no laptop or app required.
A performer assigns foot switch inputs (via Bluetooth MIDI or MIDI IN) to slot changes. In Auto Song mode with Manual part operation, the chord progression runs automatically while the performer switches slots and toggles instrument parts with their feet — changing the arrangement live without touching the device.
Students tap instrument icons on the touchscreen to toggle parts on/off, directly hearing how drums, bass, guitar, piano, and strings each contribute to the full sound. The tactile, visual nature of the device makes rhythm and harmony immediately tangible — no notation required.
Custom input hardware built via the Grove port or MIDI interface allows each user to perform with the input method that suits them. Full-band arrangements from a single accessible button press.
The KANTAN Chord browser extension automatically converts chord charts on Ultimate Guitar Tabs into degree numbers. Users can perform any of 1,000,000+ songs on first sight — no instrument skill required.
